The Supervisory Relationship

The Supervisory Relationship

$83.72

In the past two decades, many psychodynamic therapists have begun to view the relational processes taking place between patient and therapist as a central source of transformation. Yet traditional paradigms of clinical supervision, focusing primarily on didactic teaching, have limitations for training therapists to work in these new ways. This groundbreaking volume is the first to elaborate a comprehensive contemporary model of supervision. Using a wealth of examples and vignettes, the authors show how working within the vicissitudes of the supervisory relationship can allow the supervisee to gain a deeper understanding of the treatment method being taught. Key topics discussed include issues of power and authority, regression in the supervisory relationship, rethinking the teach/treat question, parallel process as a relational phenomenon, working with group process in case conference, and the role of the organization in supporting training. This is a richly informative resource for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychoanalysts, and others involved in clinical supervision and training. It also will serve as a text for courses in supervision and organizational psychology.

Problems (Hardcover)

Problems (Hardcover)

Aristotle of Stagirus (384–322 BC), the great Greek philosopher, researcher, logician, and scholar, studied with Plato at Athens and taught in the Academy (367–347). Subsequently he spent three years in Asia Minor at the court of his former pupil Hermeias, where he married Pythias, one of Hermeias` relations. After some time at Mitylene, he was appointed in 343/2 by King Philip of Macedon to be tutor of his teen-aged son Alexander. After Philip`s death in 336, Aristotle became head of his own school (of “Peripatetics”), the Lyceum at Athens. Because of anti-Macedonian feeling there after Alexander`s death in 323, he withdrew to Chalcis in Euboea, where he died the following year. Problems, the third-longest work in the Aristotelian corpus, contains thirty-eight books covering more than 900 problems about living things, meteorology, ethical and intellectual virtues, parts of the human body, and miscellaneous questions. Although Problems is an accretion of multiple authorship over several centuries, it offers a fascinating technical view of Peripatetic method and thought. Rhetoric to Alexander, which provides practical advice to orators, was likely composed during the period of Aristotle’s tutorship of Alexander, perhaps by Anaximenes, another of Alexander’s tutors. Both Problems and Rhetoric to Alexander replace the earlier Loeb edition by Hett and Rackham, with texts and translations incorporating the latest scholarship.

The world is changing aroung the Mamur Zapt, British Chief of Cairo’s Secret Police. It’s 1912 and there’s a war on that no one’s heard of. When an Italian man is murdered in the city’s back streets, there is concern that this could be some kind of ethnic cleansing. One of us Morelli may have been, but was he one of us enough? And were the guns in his warehouse anything to do with it? Gareth Owen — the Mamur Zapt — has to find out fast. And then, as external pressures crowd in, there are other difficult questions. What is Trudi von Ramsberg really doing in Cairo? Not to mention that other noted traveller, Gertrude Bell, or the irritating little archaeologist, T. E. Lawrence? And why has the post of Khedive’s Librarian suddenly become so important? Owen is just the man to solve these problems. He is less successful, though, in his relationship with Zeinab, especially now that she’s approaching thirty. As Cromer’s Egypt gives way to Kitchener’s Egypt, Morelli is not the only one who has problems over where his allegiance lies. Maybe the solution is for Owen to go to Zanzibar…

After the Honeymoon

$15

After the honeymoon. The very words carry a burden of sadness, as if for a short while we lived in a golden trance of love, and now weve been jolted awake. Immediately comes the thought, Oh no! Is this the person Im supposed to spend the rest of my life with? When choosing a partner, we are choosing, along with that person, a particular set of problems that we will be grappling with for the next ten, twenty, or even fifty years. Dan Wile shows how to take advantage of the inevitable problems that occur in a relationship to deepen the sense of connection. Most of these problems result from feelings we are unable to express and conversations we are unable to have. We become angry because we are unable to confide feeling hurt. We become defensive because we are unable to confide feeling threatened. We become uncompromising because of the hidden compromises we are already making. Exposing these undercurrents can turn fights into intimate conversations.

Agent-Centered Morality: An Aristotelian Alternative to Kantian Internalism

Agent-Centered Morality: An Aristotelian Alternative to Kantian Internalism

$75.27

What kinds of persons do we aspire to be, and how do our aspirations fit with our ideas of rationality? In Agent-centered Morality, George Harris argues that most of us aspire to a certain sort of integrity: we wish to be respectful of and sympathetic to others, even if we have no special relationship with them; to be loving parents, friends, and members of our communities; to be committed to many intrinsically valuable activities; and to be dedicated to excellence at what we do. Against a prevailing Kantian consensus, Harris offers an Aristotelian view of the problems presented by practical reason — problems of integrating all our concerns into a coherent, meaningful life in a way that preserves our integrity. The task of solving these problems is the integration test .Harris systematically addresses Kantian thinkers including Barbara Herman, Christine Korsgaard, Henry Allison, Thomas Hill Jr., John Rawls, David Cumminskey, Marcia Baron, Onora O’Neill, and Allen Wood to show that even the most advanced contemporary versions of the Kantian view fail to integrate all of the values that correspond to what we call a moral life. By demonstrating how the meaning of life and practical reason are internally related, Harris constructs from Aristotle’s thought a conceptual scheme that successfully integrates all the characteristics that make a life meaningful, without jeopardizing the place of any except where tragedy makes integration impossible. Harris’s elucidation of this approach is a major contribution to debates on human agency, practical reason, and morality.

 Air Pollution

Air Pollution

$155.27

A truly classic air pollution piece, this book is suitable for a variety of engineers and scientists who wish to gain an introduction to the field of air pollution. Known for its detailed development and application of equations, the book emphasizes an understanding of the relationship between sources and control of air pollution, rather than being a simple handbook on the subject. FEATURES/BENEFITS New material has been added to bring the book up to date on the latest regulations including the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The latest standards for ambient air quality and emission have been included in this revision. The authors continue to expose the reader to both the quantitative and the qualitative aspects of air quality management and air pollution control with several new questions and problems, with SI units emphasized to a greater extent than in the previous edition. The Internet is also introduced as a valuable source of additional information.

Allegory and the Tragic Chorus in Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus

Allegory and the Tragic Chorus in Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus

$39.73

In this book, Roger Travis brings together poetics and psychology to study the tragic chorus in Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus. Beginning from Quintilian’s definition of allegory as extended metaphor, Travis argues that in Oedipus at Colonus the chorus of old men forms an allegorical relationship with the aged Oedipus, which depends in turn upon the chorus’s own likeness to the Athenian audience. The play relates Oedipus allegorically to the audience through the tragic chorus and transforms Oedipus’ relation to the body of his mother Jocasta into a new relation to the land of Attica. Corresponding readings of Aeschylus’ Suppliants and Euripides’ Bacchea further explore the chorus’s role in expressing the relation of the individual to the maternal body.Employing a flexible combination of Lacanian and object-relations psychoanalytic theory, Travis investigates the tragic text’s conception of the problems of human existence. The introduction provides a useful survey of the advantages and disadvantages of various psychological approaches to tragedy, making this an important volume for students and scholars alike.

 America Reformed

America Reformed

$41.88

The Progressive Era, from the 1890s to the 1920s, was one of the most important periods in American social, political, and economic history. During this time, the United States saw a great change in the role of government, particularly in terms of its involvement in the regulation of businessand industry. This era has often been characterized as the first period in which government power was increased for largely egalitarian reasons; however, many have argued the opposite case–that the legislation was designed by industry to serve its own purposes. In America Reformed: Progressives and Progressivisms, 1890s-1920s, author Maureen A. Flanagan introduces progressivism less as a straightforward history of actual reforms than as a revision of the ways in which Americans organized themselves to confront the problems of their society. She examineshow this reorganization in turn drew Americans into a new type of relationship with the federal government. Drawing on the most up-to-date scholarship, Flanagan explores what democracy meant to various citizens and emphasizes the social justice movement as an integral aspect of progressivereforms. Organized around four thematic lines of progressivism–political, social justice, economic, and foreign policy–the book analyzes the various ideas, actors, and movements that constituted the timeperiod. By incorporating coverage of how women, African Americans, and ethnic and working-classorganizations participated in progressive reform movements, Flanagan reveals how the reform struggles of the period all revolved around defining the nature and purpose of U.S. democracy. Ideal for undergraduate courses in the U.S. Progressive Eraand the Gilded Age/Progressive Era, America Reformedfeatures documents, maps, and illustrations throughout, as well as anecdotes of historical events to introduce each chapter. The text also includes references to scholarly websites of original source material.

 Aspects of the Renaissance

Aspects of the Renaissance

$21.45

The Renaissance has long posed a problem to scholars. It has been generalized as an emergence of intellect and will in all fields of human endeavor, but because it is diversely manifested in varying attitudes and forms at various times in the Western world, this vast era of Western European history has resisted definitive boundaries. To help clarify the problems inherent in the study of the Renaissance and its relationship to the preceding and subsequent historical periods, an international conference was held in Austin, Texas, in April, 1964, jointly sponsored by the South Central Renaissance Conference and The University of Texas. The ten papers here presented reveal how during the symposium leading scholars representing several academic disciplines shared their approaches and insights into the politics, economics, science, literature, art, music, philosophy, and religion of this complex era.

 Awakening the Heart

Awakening the Heart

$24.95

Can a meditative practice assist and promote the healing relationship between psychotherapist and patient? The notable contributors to this practical book draw on a wide range of Eastern and Western disciplines–psychoanalysis, Gestalt, Aikido, and various Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist contemplative traditions–to show that it can. What they propose is a meeting between the Western psychotherapeutic approach–grounded in working with the personal problems and the need to carve out a strong awareness of self–and Eastern tradition, which emphasizes a larger kind of awareness and equanimity as a continuously available source of clarity and health for those who know how to find it. They show that joining psychotherapy with meditation can mutually awaken the hearts of both therapist and client, sparking them both to open more fully. Jacob Needleman, Erich Fromm, Robin Skynner, Ram Dass, Karl Sperber, Roger Walsh, Chogyam Trungpa, and Thomas Hora are among the contributors.

 B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal

B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal

$45.2

B.F. Skinner died in August 1990. He had been praised as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century, but was also attacked by a variety of opponents within and outside the field of psychology. This introduction to his work is first of all a guide to a correct reading of his writings, a reading devoid of the distortions and misinterpretations often conveyed by many commentators, including psychologists. It frames Skinner’s contributions with reference to major European traditions in psychological sciences, namely Pavlov, Freud, Lorenz and Piaget. Crucial aspects of Skinner’s theory and methodological stands are discussed in the context of contemporary debates: special attention is devoted to the relationship of psychology with biology and the neurosciences, to the cognitivist movement, to the status of language and to the explanation of novelty and creativity in human behaviour.; Finally, Skinner’s social and political philosophy is presented with an emphasis on the provocative aspects of ananalysis of current social practices which fail to solve most of the urgent problems humankind is confronted with today. Both in science proper and in human affairs at large, Skinner’s thought is shown to be not behind, as is often claimed, but ahead of the times, be it in his interactive view of linguistic communication, in his very modern use of the evolutionary analogy to explain the dynamics of behaviour, or in his vision of ecological constraints.

Bedside Manners is an engaging, often surprising investigation into what happens when we sit down and talk openly about vital issues of health and mortality. Readers will come away from these tales of difficult diagnoses, irreverent colleagues, brave survivors, and examining-room poseurs sharing Watts’s own sense of humbled astonishment. As he tells each story, Watts closes for the reader the protective distance many doctors employ, and touches all of us who have felt vulnerable in the position of patient. Beyond the Battlefield

Beyond the Battlefield

$21.75

During the past decade and a half, scholars have increasingly addressed the relationship of history and memory. Among American historians, David W. Blight has been a pioneer in the field of memory studies, especially on the problems of slavery, race, and the Civil War. In this collection of essays, Blight examines the meanings embedded in the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War, the nature of changing approaches to African American history, and the significance of race in the ways Americans, North and South, black and white, developed historical memories of the nation’s most divisive event. The book as a whole demonstrates several ways to probe the history of memory, to understand how and why groups of Americans have constructed versions of the past in the service of contemporary social needs. Topics range from the writing and thought of Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. Du Bois to a comparison of Abraham Lincoln and Douglass on the level of language and memory. The volume also includes a compelling study of the values of a single Union soldier, an analysis of Ken Burns’s PBS series The Civil War, and a retrospective treatment of the distinguished African American historian Nathan I. Huggins.Taken together, these lucidly written pieces offer a thoroughgoing assessment of the stakes of Civil War memory and their consequences for American race relations. Beyond the Battlefield demonstrates not only why we should preserve and study our Civil War battlefields, but also why we should lift our vision above those landscapes and ponder all the unfinished questions of healing and justice, of racial harmony and disharmony, that still bedevil our society and our historicalimagination.

Biblical Religion and Family Values: A Problem in the Philosophy of Culture

$134.41

In this broad philosophical examination of the relationship between religion and the family, Jay Newman delves into issues concerning Biblical religion, culture, and family values. He maintains that recent media debates about the Bible and family values have obscured the complex relationship between religion and the family. After reflecting on how the family values that Biblical literature imparts might be relevant–or irrelevant–to family problems and other cultural problems in a modern Western democracy, this study explores the cultural and existential significance of competition and cooperation between Biblical religion and the family.

Biology, Medicine and Society 1840 1940

Biology, Medicine and Society 1840 1940

$58

During the period 1840-1940 biology and medicine were transformed, and took on major implications for social amelioration and population growth. New biological disciplines such as genetics and psychology consciously used scientific explanation to redefine the life of the individual. This volume originates from a Past and Present conference on ‘The Roots of Sociobiology’ held in 1978 and incorporates the results of recent research on problems in the social relations of the biological sciences. The authors describe different historical aspects of the interrelationship of technical experience and social policy in the fields of health, education and social welfare. Insight is provided into contemporary debates on physical and racial deterioration, the sources and distribution of intelligence, the application of evolutionary biology to social and political theory, and the analysis of human societies. The authors raise issues of topical interest, such as the emergence and influence of eugenics, the origin and impact of intelligence testing, the relationship between eugenics, genetics and evolutionary theory, and the causes of the twentieth-century reduction in infant and maternal mortality. The area of coverage is Britain, America and Germany. The introduction provides a review of recent research on the social relations of biology and medicine.

 Biomedical Ethics

Biomedical Ethics

$24.95

Today, advances in medicine and biotechnology occur at a rapid pace and have a profound impact on our lives. Mechanical devices can sustain an injured person’s life indefinitely. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the body and brain can reveal disordersbefore symptoms appear. Genetic testing of embryos can predict whether people will have diseases earlier or later in life. It may even become possible to clone human beings. These and other developments raise difficult ethical questions. Biomedical Ethics is an engaging philosophical introduction to the most important ethical positions and arguments in six areas of biomedicine: the patient-doctor relationship, medical research on humans, reproductive rights and technologies, genetics, medical decisions at the end of life, andthe allocation of scarce medical resources. Concisely capturing the historical, contemporary, and future-oriented aspects of the field, author Walter Glannon discusses both perennial issues in medicine, such as doctors’ duties to patients, and recent and emerging issues in scientific innovation, including gene therapy and cloning. Ideal for undergraduate courses in contemporary moral problems, introduction to ethics, and introduction to bioethics, Biomedical Ethics is accessible to students who have little or no background in ethical theory, medicine, or biotechnology.

Bitter Rehearsal: British and American Planning for a Post-War West Indies

Bitter Rehearsal: British and American Planning for a Post-War West Indies

$112.9

Promoted as a means for rectifying the problems of a region in extreme need, the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission (AACC) only exposed and exacerbated the underlying antagonisms between Britain and the United States over the economic and political structure of the post-war world. This study places the AACC, formed in 1942, within the context of the Anglo-American wartime special relationship, and examines the political, economic, and security motives at the heart of this unique and little-known collaboration. It exposes the determination of the United States to use exigencies of war to impose its post-war plans upon Britain, and the tenacity of the British to defend even the smallest and least regarded of its possessions regardless of local and international opposition. The AACC was a battleground of conflicting British and American visions of a new West Indies, and it would thus serve as a rehearsal for key debates that would emerge at the end of the war. For the United States, the AACC was a vehicle for promoting America’s broad postwar ambitions in the West Indies; for Britain, it was simply part of the price that had to be paid for American assistance in the war effort. Debates within the AACC over the future of West Indian sugar, the regulation of tariffs and trade, constitutional reform and the expansion of civil aviation mirrored wider British and American differences.

Black and Blue: Policing in South Africa

Black and Blue: Policing in South Africa

$131.93

The South African Police Force is among the world’s most controversial police forces, plagued by allegations of misconduct and archaic methods. John Brewer places these problems in their historical context through this detailed study of the origins and development of policing in South Africa.Brewer sees a major problem in the lack of modernization: long after similar forces around the world had been modernized, South African Police continued to discharge a colonial role, using policing methods and styles suitable for the nineteenth century. Brewer eloquently links this lack ofmodernization and development to the South African state’s need for a police force to uphold and implement its policies of internal colonialism. He argues further that this is the source of the close relationship between the police and state in South Africa. Now that the South African government hasbeen transformed, the police force must adapt. Brewer concludes with a discussion of reform and warns that it will be severely constrained if it fails to transcend its colonial origins.

Agger focuses on issues of food, exercise, work, dieting and eating disorders, fashion, bariatric and cosmetic surgery, and health. He proposes solutions, both individual and structural, that involve re-orienting ourselves to exercise as play. The book can be used in introductory sociology, social problems, work, sociology of sport, gender, health and illness.

 Bone and Osteoarthritis

Bone and Osteoarthritis

$37.99

Orthopedics and rheumatology, while separate specialties, have become close conceptually because advances in bone and joint biology enable practitioners to approach clinical problems comprehensively. This is especially true for the bench and translational scientists. Recently, there has been renewed interest in the role played by bone in the development of osteoarthritis, including targeting bone as a potential therapeutic approach. The molecular and cellular approaches toward the relationship of joint and bone problems distinguish this from other books on osteoarthritis or skeletal medicine. Emphasis on genetics and on newer viewpoints and approaches, exemplified by the possible effect of subchondral bone on osteoarthritis, gives a wider viewpoint to the reader and may make possible novel approaches to solving a clinical problem. The book will therefore also interest experienced specialists, thereby broadening readership. Authors are internationally recognized experts in their field. Topics discussed include the role of bone in osteoarthritis, ranging from basic cell and molecular biology to genetics and biomechanics. How this information may be used for new treatment approaches will also be covered. This book, intended for students, researchers and clinicians, provides information that enables the novice to become oriented and the practitioner to update knowledge. No other book combines information on the relationship of bone to the development of osteoarthritis, or treats the pathophysiology of joints in the same way. This volume, like the others in Topics in Bone Biology series, encompasses aspects of many specialties, including rheumatology, orthopedics, endocrinology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, nursing and chiropractic medicine.

 Bourdieu

Bourdieu

$46.95

This Critical Reader provides a new perspective on the work of France’s foremost social theorist Pierre Bourdieu, by examining its philosophical import and promoting a fruitful dialogue between Bourdieu and philosophers in the English-speaking world. The contributors include leading philosophers who critically assess Bourdieu’s philosophical theories and their significance from diverse philosophical perspectives to reveal which dimensions of his thought are the most useful for philosophy today. These discussions also raise important questions about the current institutional limits of philosophy and how those limits may be overcome through a more robust alliance with the social sciences and the practical social world. The contributions cover Bourdieu’s use of central figures in the Anglo-American philosophical tradition; his relationship to analytical philosophy and pragmatism through his concept of habitus; his position in twentieth-century continental philosophy; the political dimension of his work; the function and limits of his notion of the field; and the relation of his explanatory models to new directions in the philosophy of science. The book also discusses some of his most recent writing not yet translated into English, and it concludes with a chapter by Bourdieu in which he analyses the diverse structural problems and the transformations involved in importing intellectual ideas from one national field to another. The volume also offers a specially prepared comprehensive bibliography of Bourdieu’s publications in French and English from 1958 to 1998.

 Building Strengths And Skills

Building Strengths And Skills

$61.24

This is a much-needed practice book that demonstrates how helping professionals can emphasize their clients’ resilience, strength, and capacities, rather than focusing on pathology or deficits. It offers an integrative practice model for both assessment and intervention that interweavesstrengths-based (specifically solution-focused therapy and motivational interviewing) and skills-building (cognitive-behavioral) approaches. In the strengths-and-skills-based model, helping professionals assume that clients possess the necessary capacities to solve their own problems, transformingthe therapeutic relationship into a collaboration focused on bolstering motivation and resources for change. When these resources are exhausted or when deficits become a substantial barrier, then practitioner and client work to develop an individualized skills-building plan. A wide range ofexamples, written by Jacqueline Corcoran with experts from different fields of practice, clearly demonstrate how the model can be applied to individuals and families struggling with behavior problems, depression, substance abuse, anxiety, violence, and abuse, so that both strengths and skillsmaximize the client’s success. This innovative, dynamic resource is a must have for practitioners across the helping, social service, and mental health professions.
