The Supervisory Relationship

The Supervisory Relationship

$83.72

In the past two decades, many psychodynamic therapists have begun to view the relational processes taking place between patient and therapist as a central source of transformation. Yet traditional paradigms of clinical supervision, focusing primarily on didactic teaching, have limitations for training therapists to work in these new ways. This groundbreaking volume is the first to elaborate a comprehensive contemporary model of supervision. Using a wealth of examples and vignettes, the authors show how working within the vicissitudes of the supervisory relationship can allow the supervisee to gain a deeper understanding of the treatment method being taught. Key topics discussed include issues of power and authority, regression in the supervisory relationship, rethinking the teach/treat question, parallel process as a relational phenomenon, working with group process in case conference, and the role of the organization in supporting training. This is a richly informative resource for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychoanalysts, and others involved in clinical supervision and training. It also will serve as a text for courses in supervision and organizational psychology.

The Disaster Experts (Hardcover)

The Disaster Experts (Hardcover)

$86.54

In the wake of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, many are asking what, if anything, can be done to prevent large-scale disasters. How is it that we know more about the hazards of modern American life than ever before, yet the nation faces ever-increasing losses from such events? History shows that disasters are not simply random acts. Where is the logic in creating an elaborate set of fire codes for buildings, and then allowing structures like the Twin Towers—tall, impressive, and risky—to go up as design experiments? Why prepare for terrorist attacks above all else when floods, fires, and earthquakes pose far more consistent threats to American life and prosperity? The Disaster Experts takes on these questions, offering historical context for understanding who the experts are that influence these decisions, how they became powerful, and why they are only slightly closer today than a decade ago to protecting the public from disasters. Tracing the intertwined development of disaster expertise, public policy, and urbanization over the past century, historian Scott Gabriel Knowles tells the fascinating story of how this diverse collection of professionals—insurance inspectors, engineers, scientists, journalists, public officials, civil defense planners, and emergency managers—emerged as the authorities on risk and disaster and, in the process, shaped modern America.

 A Companion to Gower

A Companion to Gower

$41

Chaucer, Gower and Lydgate were the three poets of their time considered to have founded the English poetic tradition. Gower, like Lydgate, eventually fell victim to changing tastes but is now enjoying renewed scholarly attention. Current work in manuscript studies, linguistic studies, vernacularity, translation, politics, and the contexts of literary production has found a rich source in Gower’s trilingual, learned, and politically engaged corpus. This Companion to Gower offers essays by scholars from Britain and North America, covering Gower’s works in all three of his languages; they consider his relationships to his literary sources, and to his social, material and historical contexts; and they offer an overview of the manuscript, linguistic, and editorial traditions. Five essays concentrate specifically on the Confessio Amantis, Gower’s major Middle English work, reading it in terms of its relationship to vernacular and classical models, its poetic style, and its treatment of such themes as politics, kingship, gender, sexuality, authority, authorship and self-governance. A reference bibliography, arranged as a chronology of criticism, concludes the volume. Contributors J.A. BURROW, ARDIS BUTTERFIELD, NATHALIE COHEN, E.H. COOPER, SIAN ECHARD, ROBERT EPSTEIN, JOHN HINES, EDWARD MOORE, DEREK PEARSALL, RUSSELL PECK, A.G. RIGG, SIMON ROFFEY, JEREMY J. SMITH, DIANE WATT, WINTHROP WETHERBEE, ROBERT F. YEAGER. SIAN ECHARD is associate professor, Department of English, University of British Columbia. The Companion can serve as an introduction to Gower and his works for the advanced undergraduate or graduate student, and the essays will also be of interest to experts in Middle Englishstudies and in Gower.

A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care, a Guide for Family Caregivers

A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care, a Guide for Family Caregivers

$12.95

Four million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and experts estimate that 22 million people around the world will be so afflicted by 2025. Far too many families are struggling with the emotionally and physically draining responsibility of redefining their relationship with, and caring for, someone who not long ago was a vibrant member of society, yet may not know their own name today. A Dignified Life helps combat the burnout and frustration that often accompany the task of caring for an Alzheimer’s patient. Author David Troxel, an Alzheimer’s expert and executive director of the California Central Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, maintains that at its simplest this approach is based on treating the person like a best friend and working from their strengths, not their weaknesses. He explains: As family members, caregivers and professionals, we have to try to connect with them. People with this disease in some way need someone to be . . . attentive and empathetic–someone who really tries to walk a mile in their shoes. A Dignified Life goes beyond the typical tips offered by most books and takes advantage of readers’ instinctive desire to build friendships and taps into the intuitive aspect of caregiving that is part of our very nature. It provides a complete model for care built around creative and effective communication and meaningful activities and includes touching stories that demonstrate how the Best Friends method continues to improve the lives of both those who have Alzheimer’s disease and those who care for them.

A Marketer’s Guide to E-crm

$37.95

A Marketer’s Guide to e-CRM directly addresses the analyses involved in e-CRM and demystifies the processes, enabling marketers to understand and evaluate e-CRM strategy and its application. Additional coverage is given to point of sale materials, conventional direct mail media, for example the telephone, and to digital media such as email. Written in a succinct and concise style, this highly practical guide is an asset for any practitioner wishing to successfully adopt e-CRM strategies, and secure and maintain effective and rewarding relationships with customers. * Built around the ground-breaking approach to e-CRM developed by the author’s company, Acxiom, who are experts in this field* Based on the author’s daily consulting experience, thereby directly relevant and applicable * Highly practical, setting the book apart from the competition

A New Era for Wolves and People

A New Era for Wolves and People

$36.08

Wolves hold an almost mythical status in the cultural history of Europe and North America. For hundreds of years, they have been the subject of fairy tales and other lore, embodying mystery, cunning, and sometimes threat. People are drawn to their beauty, intrigued by their behaviours. Yet for those who live in close proximity to wolves, coexistence is fraught with many serious issues. Wolf management is an excellent model of human-nature interaction and the challenges that come along with it. A New Era for Wolves and People analyzes the crucial relationship between human ethics, attitudes, and policy and the management of wolf populations in Europe and North America. The contributors to this volume assert that these human dimensions affect wolf survival just as much, if not more, than the physical environment. Contributors include recognized scientists and other wolf experts who introduce new and sometimes controversial findings. A New Era for Wolves and People includes colour photographs by David C. Olson and drawings by wildlife artist Susan Shimeld.

 A World of Fragile Things

A World of Fragile Things

$22.95

How are our lives meaningful? What is the relationship of loss to creativity? How can we best engage and overcome our suffering? From Socrates to Foucault, Western philosophers have sought to define the art of living –the complex craft of human existence that elicits our thoughtful participation, and the idea that even though death escapes our control, life is not something that simply happens to us in a passive manner but is instead a process that invites our active and lively engagement. A World of Fragile Things offers a distinctly psychoanalytic perspective on the art of living, one that focuses on ongoing and ever-evolving processes of self-fashioning rather than defining a fixed and unitary sense of self. With a compelling blend of philosophical insight and psychoanalytic acumen, Mari Ruti asks experts and readers alike to probe the complexities of human existence, offering a contemporary outlook on some of the most enduring questions of Western thought.

 AIDS and Ethics

AIDS and Ethics

Professionals and society at large are confronted by a wide range of complex ethical issues produced by the AIDS health crisis. AIDS and Ethics is the first major collection of essays on the complex ethical issues created by the AIDS crisis. The nation’s leading bioethics experts from the fields of law, medicine, philosophy, political science, religion, and social work present original and accessible essays. A fascinating and informative read. *The Boston Globe A RICH SOURCE OF FASCINATING MATERIAL about the complex realities of siblinghood and a valuable commentary on the impact that these little-studied relationships have upon our lives. *The New Republic Many books have attempted to tackle the complex theme of sibling connection. But rather than look at the minutae of these relationships, journalist Susan Scarf Merrell examines the big issues that all siblings wrestle with in their own unique ways *in particular the Three Cs: Competition, Cooperation, and Comparison. What she discovered was that no matter what kind of relationship we now have with our siblings *close or distant, loving or hostile *our histories with them exert a profound effect on our current relationship with lovers, friends, coworkers, and our own children. Drawing on the most current research; the work of psychologists, psychiatrists, and family experts; and stories from brothers and sisters themselves, Merrell illustrates that through siblings, we come to know both the worst and the very best that lurks within each of us. Susan Merrell brilliantly illuminates how the peculiar mix of biology, history, and intimacy makes our attachments to siblings so essential to knowing ourselves. *Mary Kay Blakely Author of American Mom

American Oil Diplomacy in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea

American Oil Diplomacy in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea

$41.24

The United States is the world’s largest oil consumer and importer. Here Gawdat Bahgat examines the nation’s growing dependence on fossil fuels–particularly oil–and the main challenges it faces in securing supplies from two energy-rich regions, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. He argues that long-term U.S. energy strategy must be built on diversity of both the fuel mix and the geographic origin of that fuel. It should include a broad combination of measures that would stimulate domestic production, provide incentives for conservation, promote clean technologies, and eliminate political barriers to world markets. Bahgat also contends, however, that the goal should not be energy independence, but finding new ways of managing dependence on oil supplies from abroad. He maintains that despite increasing reservoirs of oil and natural gas throughout the world, including the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf will continue to be the main source of U.S. fossil fuel. Bahgat analyzes both recent and historical challenges to the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer and exporter, including the Arab-Israeli peace process. He also discusses the hostility between the United States and Iraq and the tense relationship between the United States and Iran, analyzing such sensitive topics as the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, as well as developments in the wake of September 11, 2001. In his assessment of the underdeveloped Caspian Sea reservoir, Bahgat suggests that energy experts and policy makers have exaggerated the region’s potential, citing logistical, economic, and political obstacles that must be overcome before theregion plays a major role in producing fossil fuels. These obstacles include domestic ethnic divisions, disputes over the legal status of the Caspian, disagreements over the most cost-effective transportation routes, and changes in the region in the aftermath of the war on terrorism.

 Bone and Osteoarthritis

Bone and Osteoarthritis

$37.99

Orthopedics and rheumatology, while separate specialties, have become close conceptually because advances in bone and joint biology enable practitioners to approach clinical problems comprehensively. This is especially true for the bench and translational scientists. Recently, there has been renewed interest in the role played by bone in the development of osteoarthritis, including targeting bone as a potential therapeutic approach. The molecular and cellular approaches toward the relationship of joint and bone problems distinguish this from other books on osteoarthritis or skeletal medicine. Emphasis on genetics and on newer viewpoints and approaches, exemplified by the possible effect of subchondral bone on osteoarthritis, gives a wider viewpoint to the reader and may make possible novel approaches to solving a clinical problem. The book will therefore also interest experienced specialists, thereby broadening readership. Authors are internationally recognized experts in their field. Topics discussed include the role of bone in osteoarthritis, ranging from basic cell and molecular biology to genetics and biomechanics. How this information may be used for new treatment approaches will also be covered. This book, intended for students, researchers and clinicians, provides information that enables the novice to become oriented and the practitioner to update knowledge. No other book combines information on the relationship of bone to the development of osteoarthritis, or treats the pathophysiology of joints in the same way. This volume, like the others in Topics in Bone Biology series, encompasses aspects of many specialties, including rheumatology, orthopedics, endocrinology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, nursing and chiropractic medicine.

 Boundaries of Touch

Boundaries of Touch

$114.39

A history of the shifting and conflicting ideas about when, where, and how we should touch our children Discussing issues of parent-child contact ranging from breastfeeding to sexual abuse, Jean O’Malley Halley traces the evolution of mainstream ideas about touching between adults and children over the course of the twentieth century in the United States. Debates over when a child should be weaned and whether to allow a child to sleep in the parent’s bed reveal deep differences in conceptions of appropriate adult-child contact. Boundaries of Touch shows how arguments about adult-child touch have been politicized, simplified, and bifurcated into naturalist and behaviorist viewpoints, thereby sharpening certain binary constructions such as mind/body and male/female. Halley discusses the gendering of ideas about touch that were advanced by influential social scientists and parenting experts including Benjamin Spock, Alfred C. Kinsey, and Luther Emmett Holt. She also explores how touch ideology fared within and against the post-World War II feminist movements, especially with respect to issues of breastfeeding and sleeping with a child versus using a crib. In addition to contemporary periodicals and self-help books on child rearing, Halley uses information gathered from interviews she conducted with mothers ranging in age from twenty-eight to seventy-three. Throughout, she reveals how the parent-child relationship, far from being a private or benign subject, continues as a highly contested, politicized affair of keen public interest.

 Building Strengths And Skills

Building Strengths And Skills

$61.24

This is a much-needed practice book that demonstrates how helping professionals can emphasize their clients’ resilience, strength, and capacities, rather than focusing on pathology or deficits. It offers an integrative practice model for both assessment and intervention that interweavesstrengths-based (specifically solution-focused therapy and motivational interviewing) and skills-building (cognitive-behavioral) approaches. In the strengths-and-skills-based model, helping professionals assume that clients possess the necessary capacities to solve their own problems, transformingthe therapeutic relationship into a collaboration focused on bolstering motivation and resources for change. When these resources are exhausted or when deficits become a substantial barrier, then practitioner and client work to develop an individualized skills-building plan. A wide range ofexamples, written by Jacqueline Corcoran with experts from different fields of practice, clearly demonstrate how the model can be applied to individuals and families struggling with behavior problems, depression, substance abuse, anxiety, violence, and abuse, so that both strengths and skillsmaximize the client’s success. This innovative, dynamic resource is a must have for practitioners across the helping, social service, and mental health professions.

 China's Rise In Africa

China’s Rise In Africa

$149.68

In seeking to cultivate external relations with African countries, China has long stressed its commonly shared roots with African nations as a developing country rather than a Western state, and as such the symbolic attraction of China clearly reverberates with many African elites who seem to look on China as a positive development model. However, it should be noted that this has not been embraced solely by dictatorial or authoritarian regimes but in fact China ”s approach to non-interference has struck a chord even with those democratically elected leaders in Africa. While such practices clearly benefit African elites, it is remains doubtful that they do so for ordinary Africans, although sustained analysis suggests that potential exists, albeit hampered by the modalities of governance on the continent. This book brings together experts on the topic to throw light on some of the more contentious aspects of the relationship. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Constructions and the Analytic Field: History, Scenes and Destiny

Constructions and the Analytic Field: History, Scenes and Destiny

$38.95

Constructions and the Analytic Field questions the relationship between psychoanalysis, history and literature. Does the analyst help the analysand construct a narrative, or is their task more of a historical reconstruction? In seeking to answer this question, Domenico Chianese examines Freud”s writing, beginning with ”Constructions in Analysis” and ending in ”Moses and Monotheism”, as well as the impressions of analytic method reflected in contemporary writers such as Thomas Mann, and historical writings from both sides of the Atlantic. Drawing on vivid and persuasive clinical examples, he argues that psychoanalysis creates a ”scenic space” between analysand and analyst, a theatrical space wherein the cast of the patient”s interior world enter and exit from the scene. Drawing on the rich Italian psychoanalytic tradition, this original approach to the analytic field will be of interest to psychoanalysts, historians and literary experts.

Edvard Munch’s Mermaid, which accompanies the exhibition, provides the first comprehensive discussion of the painting’s history and significance. The Norwegian industrialist and collector Axel Heiberg commissioned Mermaid from Munch in 1896, when the artist was living in Paris, absorbing the city’s intellectual life, expanding his work as a printmaker, and extending his activities to new realms, such as designing the theater sets and program for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. The first two essays in this book from the Philadelphia Museum of Art situate Mermaid, Munch’s first decorative painting, within the rich ferment of this period in his life. The painting’s Norwegian imagery, Symbolist ethos, and Art Nouveau influences are explored even as its relationship to Munch’s printmaking of 1896-97 and other artistic activities is elucidated. Mermaid was removed from Heiberg’s house in 1938 and was converted by a restorer from a trapezoidal format to a standard rectangle. The final essays discusses the changes to the painting in light of Munch’s highly personal and complex views on the alteration of his works. Edvard Munch’s Mermaid reproduces all the prints, drawings, and paintings inthe exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, September 24-December 31, 2005.

Environmental Law and Policy in the European Union and the United States

$134.41

Authorities in the fields of environmental and international law and policy, political science, environmental technology, and public administration compare and contrast the ways in which the United States and the European Union handle similar environmental issues. The contributors critically analyze the influence of culture and history on the way apparently similar developed democracies handle the same problems; they examine the center-state relationship as it applies to EU member countries in contrast to states within the United States; they look at the challenge of transboundary, international, and global environmental problems, and how these relate to the still-emerging geopolitical reconfigurations involved in such structures as NAFTA and the EU; and they examine how transnational resources are handled in the North American and EU contexts. Randall Baker has assembled leading experts who examine significant issues for policymakers and environmentalists in North America and Western Europe.

 Ethics for Life Scientists

Ethics for Life Scientists

$3.4

Life sciences have huge controversial social implications. In doing experiments with animals, plants or humans the welfare of these living beings can be hampered; in communicating research results private and public interests can be harmed (patents!) or at least severely influenced; in being a member of a research group issues of human rights (such as discriminatory behaviour) can become prominent; individual and collective forms of responsibility because of controversial types of research can become urgent. Funding organizations can confront scientists and engineers with new ethical issues; the public at large or, as is the case with sustainability, future generations can challenge existing ways of doing research, and educating and teaching can confront scientists with new ethical issues. In this book, resulting from an expert workshop at Wageningen University and Research Centre, European and American experts discuss such topics and theories as the relationship between ethics, professional ethics and business ethics, the public responsibility of researchers and communicating, organizing, teaching and discussing ethical issues.
